Used as an anti-bacterial in cosmetics and stabilizer in perfumes, phenoxyethanol is actually very harmful. It is harmful if swallowed, inhaled or absorbed through skin, especially to nursing mothers or infants. It irritates skin and eyes, and can cause blistering on skin as well.

Another preservative used in cosmetics and hair care products. Causes organ system toxicity, and is an irritant to the skin, eyes and lungs. The FDA even warned that phenoxyethanol can cause shut down of the central nervous system, vomiting and contact dermatitis.

Chemically, phenoxyethanol is known as a glycol ether, or in other words, a solvent. describes phenoxyethanol as “an oily, slightly sticky liquid with a faint rose-like scent.”
